Tips for postcards

Postcards should be simple, yet bold, especially if they are being used as direct mail. It is important to make your message clear because you have a few seconds to grab someone's attention. Use easy to read fonts to reduce confusion and make your point. It is generally accepted that serif fonts are easier to read than sans serif fonts. Black backgrounds with white font are harder to reach then a white background with black text.

Postcard color

We offer three options for color choices including full color, full colors on the front and black ink on the back of the post card and full color on the front with a blank back. Postcard stock

We offer 14 point stock that is coated on one side. This is a heavier stock with a high quality UV coating on one side. Custom stocks for your postcards are available. Please fill out a custom quote form to get an estimate.

Postcard size

We offer four different standard sizes for postcards including 4 X 6, 4.25 X 6, 6 X 9 and a jumbo postcard that is 6 X 11. Compare prices and consider what you are using the postcards for when choosing a size. Custom sizes are available.

Printing

We offer two types of printing at Print Lion; digital and sheet-fed offset printing. If you order less than 500 postcards, then your postcards will be printed digitally. If you order more than 500 postcards then your postcards will be printed on a sheetfed offset press. Both types of printing offer you high quality postcards that can be used for any purpose.

Mailing

Print Lion offers affordable mailing services for your postcards. Use your current mailing list or speak with us about list acquisition. We are able to save you time and money because our mailing services are offered in-house. You will not face the lost time of having your postcards sent to a mail house.

What if I have a multiple page document?

If your project is double sided or a multiple page document, please save your pages as a single PDF in the exact order that you would like them to print. Ex: Front Cover = page 1, Inside Front Cover = page 2

How should my files be color formatted?

When designing full color files, please design using CMYK (4 color process; Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). A grayscale color mode should be used when submitting black and white graphics or images.

Your monitor is currently configured using RGB (Red, Green and Black) color process. CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) color formatting is the preferred method used for four color process printing. CMYK has the ability to reproduce the color of your graphics exactly. If your artwork was created in RBG, please convert it to CMYK before uploading. After conversion, please review your colors, as they may need adjusted.

Any files that are sent as LAB, RGB or have additional PMS (Pantone colors) will be returned to the client. If you need us to convert the files for you, there is a chance that a color change/shift will occur. This commonly happens in blues and browns.

What is bleed?

Bleed is a printing term that refers to printing that goes beyond the edge of the sheet after trimming. The bleed is the part on the side of your document that gives the printer that small amount of space to move around paper and design inconsistencies.

Can my file have bleeds?

Yes…If you need assistance setting up your bleed please refer to our free design templates. If you are submitting files and not using our templates, it is important that you include a 1/8" bleed on all four sides of your document. If including crop marks, please make sure to center your document within the PDF.

What is the Safety Line?

As you are designing your printed material, keep in mind that any images or text should be placed within the safety or trim areas as noted on our free templates or 1/8" of an inch in from the final cut.

What are the file types that you can accept?

We accept all file types. EPS and PDF are our standard preferred format, and will allow you to receive a Free PDF proof in just minutes.

.pdf PDF preserves fonts and formatting electronically across multiple platforms and will reproduce on the screen as on printed paper.

.eps EPS is an encapsulated postscript file. EPS can be processed through Illustrator or Photoshop. The preferred output when using Illustrator

Can you work with Word and Publisher Documents?

Yes…However these files should be converted to a PDF document when uploading for electronic ordering. If your file is uploaded as a Word or Publisher document, a print professional will contact and assist you with your order.

Do you need flattened files?

Photshop files should be flattened.

Do I need to outline my fonts?

Files created using Illustrator, InDesign or Freehand require that text be converted to outlines before saving as a PDF file. Photshop files should be flattened. Font sizes should be 8 pts and higher. Avoid using small or very narrow fonts with dark backgrounds as they do not print well.

What is Saddle-Stitch?

Saddle-Stitched is a method of securing loose printed pages with staples down the middle of a folded sheaf of papers.

What is plastic coil binding?

A continuous coil of wire or plastic passes through many die cut holes along one side of the papers.

Do you have templates available for the different folding options?

Should I remove the lines that are on the free template?

Yes…These trim and bleed lines will print if left on the file.

What if my file is an exact reprint?

A list of all your previous jobs is available when signing into your account. Use the specs of the job you want to reprint, when placing your order online. You may also contact us, referencing the job number you'd like to reprint.

How should I create a heavy black background?

When creating full coverage black backgrounds make sure to create the black at 50% Cyan, 30% Magenta, 30% Yellow and 100% Black.
